Miyako Resorts: Shima Kanko Hotel 志摩観光ホテル

Back in October I was asked to do an interview about Ise Jingū for the winter edition of a resort hotel’s publication called Shima jikan 志摩時間. I am a historian in the Communication Department コミュニケーション学科 at Kōgakkan University 皇學館大学, but I don’t have any particular expertise in Shinto or the shrine, so it is more of a reflective piece on what I find compelling about the site––the juxtaposition of the past that I’ve researched in documents, and the present that we get to experience in much the same way that people have for over 1,300 years. If you have an opportunity to visit in the winter, it’s a great time to come, because (according to Ise City statistics) over a million people will be there to bid farewell to the old year and welcome in the new one.
